POSTPARTUM
INSTRUCTIONS
Allow us to be the first to congratulate you on the birth of your child. We look forward
to seeing you back in the office for your postpartum check up. Please call our office on
the next business day to set up an appointment for 4 weeks with your doctor.
1. During the first week, no housework, i.e., no cooking, cleaning, laundry, or heavy
lifting. After the first week, you can gradually increase your activity back to a normal
level.
2. During the entire 4 weeks, no sex no douching, and no tampons. While you are still
bleeding, please do not tub bathe or swim. Make sure you abstain from sexual intercourse
until your doctor sees you back in the office and you are able to discuss a method of
birth control that will meet your personal needs.
3. If you are nursing, continue taking you prenatal vitamins. If you were taking Iron
during your pregnancy continue this as well. Make sure that you drink plenty of water (one
8-oz. glass per nursing session). Please contact The Arizona Lactation Center, L.L.C. at
(602) 404-2475 if you experience problems or complications of breastfeeding.
4. You will be on a regular diet. If you are also on a narcotic pain reliever, you may
want to take a stool softener/laxative since narcotics can be constipating. Other pain
relievers, such as Tylenol and Ibuprofen, are safe with nursing and do not have the same
side effects as the narcotic pain relievers.
5. Please contact your pediatrician if you have any questions regarding your babys
health. We would be glad to answer any questions you have regarding your health during
business hours when we have access to your chart and a physician is available. We are also
available 24 hours a day if an emergency should arise. Please contact our office if you
have a fever over 100.5 F, pain that persists after taking pain medication, or heavy
bleeding.
