CIRCUMCISION
The following patient education
brochure and policy statements are the most recent decisions endorsed by the American
Academy of Pediatrics on the topic of circumcision. Historically practiced since before
the time of Abraham it is a binding covenant to some and an act of mutilation to others.
It is mired in controversy and religious dogma and caution must be exercised when seeking
information, especially on the web. The overall benefits and harms of circumcision are
evenly balanced in the opinion of most medical communities and there is little endorsement
for routine circumcision. Preoperative analgesia, informed consent and a full disclosure
of the potential risks of circumcision should be discussed with you and your caretaker.
